A Trainee Diver is one who has completed the Trainee Diver (Diver *) Training Module, and is ready to

gain further experience and log qualifying dives for the Club Diver Exam. Trainee Divers must always

be accompanied by a diver of a higher grade.

The intention of the course is to provide the beginner with the technical information and practical skills

required for scuba diving.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

1. Be at least 16 years of age.

2. In the swimming pool complete the following:-

(a) Swim 200 metres freestyle without stopping.

(b) Swim 50 metres backstroke without stopping.

(c) With head submerged in the water, hold breath for 30 seconds within 5 minutes of

(a) and (b) above.

COURSE CONTENT

This comprises of a series of lectures, pool and open water snorkel and scuba training. The course is

designed so that theoretical knowledge, pool snorkel/scuba activities run concurrently, along with open

water snorkel training. Open water scuba activities will commence following all other instruction and

on completion of the required Diving Medical.

Lecture Programme

Included in this series of theoretical lectures is an introduction to the program, the equipment used in

diving, an introduction to the Laws of Physics and Medicine as related to diving and some techniques

used for the prevention and treatment of diving accidents. Lectures as per the Club Diver (Diver **)

Module include the following:-

Introduction Equipment

Introduction to the Course and C.M.A.S. Diving Equipment

Physics Techniques

Introduction to Dive Physics Hand Signals

Effects of Pressure Out of Air

Decompression Dive Tables

Buoyancy Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Pool Snorkel Training

Complete the following practical pool exercises at a pace dictated by the ability of each student:-

1. Introduction to basic equipment.

2. Finning techniques.

3. Mask and snorkel clearing.

4. Methods of entry: Jump,Vertical, Silent, Step, etc.

5. Snorkel Diving.

6. Three forward rolls and three backward rolls.

7. Snorkel dive and swim 25 metres underwater without a mask.

8. With face submerged, snorkel 25 metres without a mask, while breathing through a snorkel.

9. Without surfacing clear the mask and on surfacing clear the snorkel.

10. Without surfacing, fit the fins, without a mask.

11. Tow a snorkel diver 50 metres while giving Expired Air Resuscitation (EAR).

Pool Snorkel Test

Exercises ?1? through ?11? are carried out without difficulty in one single pool session to the

satisfaction of the Club Diving Officer.

Open Water Snorkel Training

Log a minimum of 3 open water snorkels of at least 30 minutes duration each in Irish Waters, during

which practise:-

1. Entries, buoyancy adjustment, finning and snorkel diving.

2. Mask and snorkel clearing.

3. Towing and EAR.

4. Group safety.

5. Finning without mask and snorkel.

6. Snorkel dive to at least 6 metres.

Pool Scuba Training

1. Correct assembly/disassembly of scuba equipment.

2. Flood and clear mask underwater.

3. Remove and replace regulator mouthpiece underwater.

4. Methods of entry.

5. On the bottom of the pool, remove all scuba equipment and surface observing all safety rules.

Surface dive and refit all scuba equipment.

6. Buddy breathe for three minutes and demonstrate buoyancy control.

7. Practise the "Out of Air" exercise on a one to one basis with an instructor.

8. Practise the S.M.B. deployment exercise.

Pool Scuba Test

Exercises "1" to "6" only are carried out without difficulty in one single pool session to the

satisfaction of the Club Diving Officer.

Open Water Scuba Training

Log a minimum of 5 open water training dives to a MAXIMUM depth of 10 metres, during which practise:

1. Buoyancy adjustment.

2. Mask and mouthpiece clearing.

3. Buddy breathing and use of alternate air supply.

4. In open water, rescue a diver, inflate buoyancy device and tow 100 metres while giving EAR.

5. Methods of entry.

On completion of the course, a Trainee Diver (Diver*) Certificate and Brevet will be issued. Diving

Officer to request this directly from C.F.T.
